Weekend Box Office Report: Midway flies to the top!

The action of World War II is at #1! A new big-budget war movie flew into theaters this Veteran's Day weekend and put MIDWAY in first place at the box office with an estimated opening of $17.5 million! For director Roland Emmerich (taking a break from planetary destruction like INDEPENDENCE DAY, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW and 2012), the historical action-drama was his lowest opening for a wide release since the $16.6 million start of STARGATE back in 1994. The account of the critical 1942 Pacific Theater battle (previously depicted in the 1976 Charlton Heston-led film also carrying the MIDWAY title)…

More Maleficent makes most money! Disney's iconic villainess returned for more wicked deeds this weekend and put MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL on top at the box office with an estimated opening of $36 million! The sequel could barely conjure up half the scratch of the 2014 prequel MALFICENT, which opened with $69.4 million before reaching $241 million domestic and $758 million worldwide. For Disney's live-action "reimaginings", Angelina Jolie's second time portraying the pointy-cheeked fairy didn't fly as high on its first weekend as this year's THE LION KING ($191.7 million), ALADDIN ($91.5 million) or DUMBO ($45.9 million), and actually had…

Joker is still on top! The Clown Prince of Crime continued his box office reign over his second weekend as JOKER held on to first place with an estimated $55 million! The R-rated origin story of Gotham's laughing menace only dipped by 43% from last weekend's opening. Compared to other comic book competition, that's a smaller second-weekend drop than WONDER WOMAN (43.3%) and BLACK PANTHER (44%), although the latter opened with a colossal $202 million on its first weekend. Director Todd Phillips' $55 million adapation of the chaotic DC Comics villain has a ten-day domestic total of $192.7 million, already…

Weekend Box Office Report: Joker laughs all the way to the top!

Audiences are down with the clown! Although Batman was nowhere in sight, his comic book nemesis hit the big time all by himself this weekend as JOKER premiered at #1 with an estimated opening of $93.5 million! The Clown Prince of Crime scored the biggest October opening of all time by defeating Tom Hardy and Marvel/Sony's anti-hero origin story VENOM, which started last October with $80.2 million. Alone, the painted villain was nearly a match for the collection of DC Comics' A-list superheroes -- JUSTICE LEAGUE started with $93.8 million when it opened in 2017. Joaquin Phoenix's homicidal funnyman (in…

That opening was on the low end of the spectrum for the first weekend of recent DreamWorks Animation releases, about on par with 2017's CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS ($23.8 million) and 2013's TURBO ($21.3 million) but far below the likes of THE BOSS BABY ($50.1 million), TROLLS ($46.5 million), and this year's sequel HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD ($55 million). Weekend Box Office Report: Downton Abbey takes the top!

A wealthy weekend for Downton Abbey! Audiences wanted to catch up with the Crawley family and their staff this weekend, putting DOWNTON ABBEY in first place with an estimated opening of $31 million! Picking up after six seasons of creator Julian Fellowes' popular British TV drama, the new PG-rated feature managed to keep all contenders at bay with more period intrigue at Yorkshire estate. Directed by Michael Engler (who handled several episodes of the show) and including series regulars like Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith and Elizabeth McGovern, the big-screen visit cost a reported $20 million.
